Does Reshaped Gaming use AI?
For transparency, I’ll admit I was curious and drawn to the novelty at first, but have since changed my stance on Generative AI and LLMs. Continue reading to learn more about why Reshaped Gaming does not use generative artificial intelligence.
Prior to this writing, the site had a few AI-generated images (5) and various blurbs of AI-generated text. I also used it moderately to help with creating Elemental Legends.
As of today, I’ve replaced all AI-generated texts and images with my own words or appropriately acquired media, except for the one above. I don’t know if the resources used should be considered sunk costs, but I think this is an appropriate use as a reminder. The images were already generated, can one serve as an example?
Story Time
When I was in my senior year of high school, I was a very smart, very ignorant white male with a lot to learn about the rest of the world. I was somewhat of a prodigy in my class, building and programming robots with self-taught knowledge, writing websites from scratch for school clubs, publishing apps to the Google Play Store… it was no surprise to anyone that I was going off to college to study computer science and “make my mark on AI” after graduating as a valedictorian. I even developed my own interpretive programming language in my first two years of uni while getting paid to research programming language theory. I thought I knew exactly what my life was going to look like and where I would end up. But then COVID happened… Let me try summing that up:
Over the 2-3ish years we were under quarantine, I came to terms with my divergent sexuality, cut ties with my family and most of my friends, dropped out of college, and ran away to the city, learning more about myself than I ever had before. I spent a year working on who I was, immersing myself in other cultures, and developing a love for all people. I’ve since abandoned many of my tech-related aspirations in favor of advancing community and representation instead. I’ve done what I can to be anti-hate in all forms, and continue to pursue these ideals every day.
With my history… It was hard to ignore the calls of artificial intelligence all around me. This was something I always thought I would contribute to, so naturally, I experimented with ChatGPT and others for quite some time. I think these technologies are incredible and interesting, with a lot of potential to fill many roles. But as more news comes out about the impact these programs have on the environment, about the immeasurable theft that has occurred to build them, and about the risks being posed to vulnerable and impressionable communities… it has become harder for me to ignore the cost of using this technology.
I believe people should be held accountable for how they show up in life, and I believe that GenAI causes more harm than good. As a result, Reshaped Gaming refuses to further engage in trends or behavior that contribute to AI’s dominating presence in art and media. I know it’s a gamble to resist change, but the roll that matters chooses humanity, not progress.
